Pool Party

November birthdays. Not my favorite month of the year and one that poses a party challenge for a mom with a small house and a second child in the shadow of his brother's notorious birthday picnics. Wesley's birthday is at the end of August and since his first one we've had a big backyard themed picnic with both his friends and ours. We'd like to keep Preston's birthdays a bit more intimate, but we still don't have the space at home to accomodate that many people inside. So my challenge was to scout out venues that would be perfect party spots (but wouldn't break our bank) for our 2 year old's special day. We've been Y members for almost a year and are there all the time, exercising, using the play gym, swimming in the pool, etc. Preston has developed an affinity for the pool recently, so even though my initial thought was to have his birthday party in the gym (because he loves balls) we decided on a pool party because we thought that that would be fun for everyone. It was a bit chaotic due to a swim meet happening that day (prior to our party.) In fact, they actually had to reschedule our party time to accomodate the meet - something I was agreeable to at the time, but would not have done had I known how rushed we would have been after we swam. We started the party in the party room for cake, ice cream, presents, and a little dancing. Then it was down to the pool for an hour (or a little less once we got down there) of swimming. I was so stressed in the party room, but once we got down to the pool, it was a blast and everyone had a great time - especially the birthday boy. My only regret is that we weren't able to start the party in the pool and finish with the cake, instead of vice versa. But other than that, it was a great time.
